Configuring DNC Communications in GibbsCAM

Follow these steps to set up and use RS-232/DNC communication between GibbsCAM and your CNC machine (e.g., Fadal).

Phase 1: Initial Configuration
Before starting in GibbsCAM, ensure your hardware is recognized by Windows.
1. Identify the COM Port: Open the Windows Device Manager and note the COM Port number assigned to your machine's communication cable.
2. Access GibbsCAM Settings: In GibbsCAM, go to File > Preferences > Com Set-up.
3. Add the Machine:
  1. In the Protocol Name field, type your machine's name.
  2. Click Add.
  3. Enter the COM Port number found in Step 1 and adjust the Baud Rate, Parity, and Data Bits to match your machine’s requirements.


Phase 2: Receiving a Program (Machine to PC)

In GibbsCAM:

  1. Go to File > Communication.

  2. Set the File Type to NCF and select your machine from the list.

  3. Click the Receive icon, then click Save File.

  4. Choose your save location, enter a filename, and click Save.

  5. Click Receive. GibbsCAM is now "listening" for the incoming data.

At the CNC Control:

  1. Type PU,2 and press ENTER to begin the transfer.



Phase 3: Sending a Program (PC to Machine)

At the CNC Control:

  1. Prepare the machine to receive by typing TA,1 and pressing ENTER.

In GibbsCAM:

  1. Go to File > Communication and ensure NCF is selected as the File Type.

  2. Select the appropriate machine from the list.

  3. Click Send, then click Program.

  4. Select the NC file you wish to transfer and click Open.

  5. Click the Send button to transmit the code to the machine.
